Sorata is a nice colonial village on a hillside beneath the snow-capped peaks of Illampu and Ancohuma, the Valley is at 2,700 meters above sea level, and 130 Km from La Paz city at the foot of the majestic snowy Mountain Illampu (6,380 m).
A very important attraction is Gruta de San Pedro (San Pedro Cave), it is close to 12 km from Sorata. Some people walk there but it takes 2 -3 hours each way, the front of the cave opens up and it is 12 m high and 150 m long, you may swim in the underground lake in the back of the cave.
It is a great town to start treks at the Andes Mounains, Laguna Glaciar is high—5,038 mts (16,529 ft)—and has small icebergs, there you will also have the possibility to see ducks and hummingbirds, as well as breathtaking sunsets and fantastic views of Illampu and across the Rio San Cristobal valley. Laguna Chillata is a sacred lake surrounded by legend and mystery, local witches (brujos) communicate with the lake to cure people of diseases and afflictions. There are ruins in the area, allegedly Inca.
